Telkom has recently announced that they will be discontinuing their copper-cable infrastructure from 1 September 2020. Before this occurs, they are attempting to migrate all their existing customers to fibre internet deals or fixed LTE to ensure there is no interruption to customer’s internet connection.

Why did Telkom decide to turn ADSL off?

Copper-cable infrastructure is less stable, slower and somewhat outdated which makes it prone to a myriad of issues, including but not limited to, copper-cable theft, electrical interference, and higher costs due to the intensive labour required in its maintenance or repair. By discontinuing this infrastructure, it allows Telkom the capital and labour force to provide better customer service and maintain other internet infrastructures more quickly and effectively, thereby providing an overall better service. In an interview with MyBroadband, Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko stated, “There will come a time when we switch off the copper technology, because what you also don’t want to do is to maintain two or three different networks at the same time as that drives cost…”.

What if I don’t have anything to replace my ADSL with?

Rest assured that you will only be migrated if you have either fibre internet or fixed LTE as alternative options. This process has been implemented in phases to ensure that no-one is left without internet connection options once the ADSL has been discontinued.

How do the alternative options compare to ADSL?

Both fibre internet and fixed LTE are far superior internet connections options as they are both much faster and more reliable. Neither have problems with cable theft or electrical interference and they both have unique benefits. Fixed LTE does not usually have an installation fee and is completely portable as it relies on a router and sim card, whilst fibre internet is the most stable form of internet connection with very few instances of downtime and is also capable of exceptionally high internet speeds (depending on your chosen package).
